Are you ready to get your crochet hooks out and make something adorable? Look no further than the Black Cat Slouch Hat, a cute and cozy accessory that will make heads turn. Designed with chunky ribbing and charming cat ears, this free crochet pattern is not only fun to create but also makes a fantastic gift. So, let’s dive right in!
A Fashionable Feline Inspiration
For some mysterious reason, making a cat ear hat has been on my mind for quite some time. And finally, I decided to bring my vision to life. Trust me, it turned out to be a purrfect idea! This hat is incredibly enjoyable to make, and the end result is simply delightful.
Pair it with the “you’re freaking meow’t” tee I designed, and you’ve got yourself an irresistibly punny outfit. If you’re interested in the cut file for that design, let me know in the comments, and I’ll gladly make it available for you. Spread the feline love!
Crafted with Style
To bring this hat to life, I used a fabulous black yarn with specks of metallic gold. It adds a beautiful tweed-like texture to the finished piece and just the right amount of subtle shimmer. Trust me, this yarn is a winner!
Crochet Cat Hat Supplies
Before we get started, gather the following supplies:
- About 150 yards of Size 6 Super Bulky Yarn or two strands of Size 4 worsted weight yarn held together
- Size L (8.0 mm) Hook (adjust hook if needed to fit yarn)
- Yarn Needle
The Crochet Cat Hat Pattern
Creating the Foundation
To begin, we’ll work a row of foundation single crochet that measures around 11″ long. If you’re unfamiliar with this stitch, I’ve added a video tutorial to guide you. Alternatively, you can chain the appropriate number of stitches and then work single crochet (sc) in each chain.
Shaping the Hat
Next, we’ll turn our attention to the height of the hat. Chain 2 and work half double crochet (hdc) stitches in the back loops only across each stitch of the previous row. Repeat this row until the piece measures approximately 19″ long or long enough to wrap comfortably around your head. Don’t worry, the hat will stretch a bit.
Bringing it All Together
Fold the long rectangle in half widthwise and stitch the short ends together to form a tube. Then, work single crochet stitches across the top of the hat. This will give it a clean and finished look.
Adding a Stylish Brim
To complete the hat, we’ll add a brim to the bottom. Join the yarn and work single crochet stitches evenly around the open edge of the hat. For a neat finish, continue these rounds in the back loops only. Finish off and weave in the ends.
Time for Ears!
No cat hat is complete without adorable ears. Use a yarn needle to stitch them onto the top corners of the hat. Feel free to adjust the shape of the ears by pulling on the ends and securing them with knots. Let your creativity shine!
Show off Your Craftsmanship
That’s it! Your Crochet Cat Hat is ready to be worn and admired. You can choose to wear it with the ears positioned a bit lower, or fold up the brim to showcase the ears on top of your head. The chunky ribbing and playful design make it a charming accessory for any cat lover.
